Equity crowdfunding
Equity crowdfunding with Crowdsphere
A different service from LendCap's peer-to-peer lending: buying a stake in a business, not lending against property.
Equity crowdfunding lets members of the public buy shares in a New Zealand business through a licensed platform. It is provided by Crowdsphere Limited (FSP360186), the company behind LendCap, under its licence from the Financial Markets Authority. It is a separate service from peer-to-peer lending: investors become shareholders, not lenders.
What equity crowdfunding is
In equity crowdfunding, a business raises money by offering shares to investors through an online platform. Instead of borrowing, the business sells part ownership. Investors receive shares and share in the company's fortunes, through growth in the value of their stake and, in some cases, dividends.
Crowdsphere Limited is licensed by the Financial Markets Authority to provide both equity crowdfunding and peer-to-peer lending services. LendCap is the peer-to-peer lending brand; the equity crowdfunding service operates separately at crowdsphere.co.nz.
How it differs from peer-to-peer lending
These are different products with different risks, and they should not be confused.
With peer-to-peer lending through LendCap, a lender advances money to a business and expects it back with interest. The loan is supported by registered security over New Zealand property. Security supports recovery but does not guarantee repayment or the amount recovered.
With equity crowdfunding, an investor buys a stake in a business. There is no loan, no interest and no property security. Returns depend on the success of the business, shares can lose value, and they can be difficult to sell. Nothing on this site about a lending opportunity is an equity investment, and nothing about equity crowdfunding is a property-backed loan.
Who it suits
Equity crowdfunding suits investors comfortable with higher risk, a longer timeframe and no guaranteed exit, in exchange for a share of a business's potential growth. It also suits New Zealand businesses looking to raise growth capital from a broad base of investors rather than a single lender or institution.
If your interest is lending against property security, see Lend: that is the peer-to-peer lending service this site covers.
Provided by Crowdsphere
Equity crowdfunding offers are made through the Crowdsphere platform, not through LendCap. For current offers and detail on how the service works, visit crowdsphere.co.nz, or send us a message using the form below.
